Sheila Conway, age 74, passed away at Winona Manor on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. It was painful, yet joyful for family and friends who wanted her struggle to end, yet didn’t want to lose her.
Sheila was born on February 2, 1944 in Winona to Joseph and Monica (Jewison) Conway.
After a horrendous car accident at age 23 which left Sheila paraplegic and confined to a wheel chair, she moved forward with courage and determination for 51 more years, surrounded by loved ones. Sheila was always giving back in every way she knew how. Her feisty nature and kind heart made for the perfect mix. One could lose themselves in laughter and conversation with her.
As we look back to Sheila’s early life, we remember her love for her horses Silver and Cocoa. She was a car expert, meaning she was an expert at conning her dad into letting her drive his brand-new Lincoln. She loved all kinds of music and had a huge collection of cd’s that she listened to every day. Bridge has to be near the top of Sheila’s list of favorite things. She was her moms’ bridge partner at Westfield for years, and then started teaching bridge to many eager learners, played in Sequoia, always making many new friends. A week never passed without one or two bridge games.
Flowers and plants filled Sheila’s yard and home. Having just a few more was always a good idea. The same could be said about anything sweet: candy, cookies, pie, cake. A few more is always better. And yes, the candy drawer must be full at all times.
In her younger years, Sheila exercised her creative talents making and selling ceramics, including beautiful nativity sets, fun gnomes and fairies and others. She also made whimsical clowns from every kind of colorful fabric.
Dave and Jane's river home was one of Sheila’s favorite places to relax and enjoy the serenity of the setting, as well as lively conversation with family and friends and good food.
Family and friends were always at the top of the list of Sheila’s favorite things. They were the players who were the music in her life. Likewise, she brought solace and joy to many other lives. Sheila was loved. As many of us take for granted the ups and downs of life it was Sheila’s perspective to just keep moving forward with open arms and a twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. Sheila, we will hold on to your hand even when you have gone away from us. We are confident a large garden and pasture full of horses awaits you in Heaven.
She is survived by four sisters: Kathleen Robertson, Winona; Linda Hull, Rochester; Jean Conway, Rochester; Jane (David) Rusch, Rochester; two brothers Phillip Conway, Minnesota City, Michael (Lisa) Conway, Winona; great friend and neighbor Pat Wanek, Winona; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Larry Conway.
Services to remember Sheila will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home, Winona. Memorials may be given to Winona Hospice, Lake Winona Manor, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
