Mary J (Morcomb) Brenno

July 16, 1937 ~ May 2, 2018 (age 80)

Mary J. Brenno, 80, of Winona, passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 2 at Lake Winona Manor with family present.

Born on July 16, 1937 in La Crosse, WI to Arlie and Helen (Gallagher) Morcomb, Mary grew-up on her family’s farm near Ridgeway, MN and played organ at her church (beginning her lifelong love of music).  She graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1954 and loved class reunions with her friends and classmates over the years, including planning several.

Mary married Duane Brenno on June 1, 1963 at McKinley United Methodist Church in Winona.  The couple met one year earlier at the wedding of close friends Bob and Mary Llwellyn of Burnsville, MN.  Mary and Duane built their own public accounting and income tax service in Winona.  She was always very appreciative of their many loyal clients, several of whom became friends.

From her first trip across the United States in 1957 as a young woman, to later trips to Norway, Bora Bora, and even the Kentucky Derby; Mary was fortunate to travel extensively with her family.  Time simply spent with her many friends on local excursions and adventures was treasured.  While Mary enjoyed the excitement and learning of travel, the quiet hobbies of quilting and handwork (as well as extensive reading) were also special throughout her life.  Her baking skills brought pleasure to many others, especially at holiday time when she and her family made dozens and dozens of special treats.

Volunteering at Winona Health was important to Mary.  She recently reached 12,000 hours of service.  During her time spent volunteering, Mary enjoyed conversation, interaction, and the making of new friends and acquaintances.

Her kindness, smile, and humility will be missed.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband.  Survivors include: daughter, Anne (Tom) Mootz of Eagan, MN; son, Steve of Winona, MN; brother James (Lois) Morcomb of Money Creek, MN; and many special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May 7 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Winona where Mary was a member.  Rev. Robert Hicks and Rev. Tori Hicks will be officiating.  Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, May 6 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home in Winona and from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Wesley United Methodist Church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winona Health Foundation, 855 Mankato Ave., Winona, MN 55987 (www.winonahealthfoundation.org/giving/).

Mary’s family gives a special thank you to Dr. Daniel Parker, Dr. Katrina Hammel, and the staff of Lake Winona Manor for their dedication, professionalism, and kindness.
