Jack Robert CritchfieldMay 25, 1922 ~ June 1, 2017 (age 95)
Jack was born on May 25, 1922 in Winona, MN to Willard and Hermine (Beseler) Critchfield. He graduated from Winona High School and attended Winona Teachers College before enlisting in the military to serve his country.
Jack’s active duty service began on March 31, 1942. He was assigned to the 9th Army Air Corps during WWII and served in Europe from January 1944 to November 1945. His specialty was AP Engineering Mechanic 747 and he worked on fighter planes in the European Sphere which included bases in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He proudly departed from the 911 Air Engineering Squadron on November 12, 1945 as a Tech Sergeant, having received the Good Conduct Medal for his service.
Jack returned to Winona and married the former Kay Foreman. They had three children Sue, Jane and Betsy. His oldest daughter Sue’s life ended suddenly in an accident in September, 1975.
He worked as a journeyman plumber in Winona for most of his career and ended his plumbing career as a master plumber in Monterrey and Marina, CA. His accomplishments in his field included designing the plumbing system at the Presidio in Monterrey and implemented the new heating system for Fort Ord, CA.
He will be remembered for his contagious zest for life, his uncanny ability to make people laugh, his close ties with family and being a second “Dad” to many nieces and nephews. He was a competitive bowler along with his Dad. His love of the outdoors was paramount in his life. His numerous activities included hunting, fishing, camping, archery, bird watching, nature photography, boating, canoeing, biking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and many more. He and his brother-in-law, John Foreman, established the archery range near Fountain City, WI. He was a member of Winona Archers, Isaac Walton League, Plumbers Union, and Westfield Golf Club.
Jack is survived by his two daughters; Jane Lindsay, of Jupiter, FL and Betsy (Rick) Cordes, of Bozeman, MT; grandchildren, Mark and James Lindsay; sisters, Alice Hazell, of Bend, OR and Rosalie Seltz, of Austin, MN; sisters-in-law, Phyl Foreman, of Winona, MN and Rosalie (Tom) Hausler, of San Jose, CA; and 25 nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of His Life will be on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 4 p.m. at Watkins Manor, Great Hall with Chaplain Wendy Jaine Summers officiating. Memorials may be directed to Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service- in memory of Jack R. Critchfield and his love of the outdoors.
